Pickleball is a fun sport that offers physical exercise, mental exercise, and a likely mental health boost. It is played by hitting a hollow plastic wiffleball punctuated by holes with a hard-surfaced paddle over a short net on a badminton size court.

Invented in1965 on Bainbridge Island, Seattle by Barney McCullum, Bill Bell and Joel Prichard named after the local Pickle boat races that used hybrid crews as Pickleball is a hybrid of Tennis and Ping Pong on a Badminton size court.

It promises mental and physical exercise as well as fun with friends. It can be played outdoors or indoors, by all ages. When the weather cooperates, outdoor even reduced health concerns during the pandemic as many took up this amazing game. There is even scientific backing to its benefits.

Here are some of the benefits of playing pickleball:

Physical Exercise: Pickleball offers high-intensity interval training (HIIT) which is an efficient way to get the benefits of aerobic exercise in a short time. It can offer some of the benefits of tennis but on a smaller scale. There is evolutionary evidence for the benefits of physical activity, particularly in middle age and above. Mental Exercise: The mental game of pickleball is analyzed thoroughly in The Picklewood Bible, which quotes Yogi Berra: “Ninety percent of this game is half mental.” Pickleball requires quick reflexes and strategic thinking. Socialization: Pickleball is a social sport that can help you meet new people and make new friends. Stress Relief: Physical activity releases endorphins in your brain, which are chemicals that relieve stress and pain. Playing pickleball can help you mentally relax while you’re physically “working out.” Cardiovascular Health: Pickleball can help improve your cardiovascular health by increasing your heart rate and breathing rate. Flexibility: Pickleball requires quick movements and changes in direction which can help improve your flexibility. Balance: Pickleball requires balance which can help improve your balance. Weight Loss: A game of pickleball can burn up to 600 calories per hour, making it an excellent way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight
